2004 toyota matrix review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Practical and affordable, sporty and stylish. introductionthe toyota matrix is part car, part wagon, part minivan, part suv. Toyota even calls it a cuv for compact utility vehicle. We're not sure whether the acronym will catch on, but the matrix appears to have caught on. Matrix was introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, and toyota sold nearly 30,000 of the compact wagons in the first half of the 2003 calendar year. Toyota claims the matrix combines the style and performance of a sports car with the functionality of an suv and the affordability of a compact sedan. Matrix is practical, with a big cargo area that can be expanded by folding down the rear seats. And it's certainly stylish. while the high-performance xrs model has drawn some attention with its high-revving 180-horsepower engine, we preferred the 130-horsepower models for their more relaxed, more pleasant demeanor. lineuptoyota matrix is available in three trim lines: the standard matrix, xr, and xrs. Two engines are available. A wider range of optional equipment is available for the xr as well. Extra value package 1 270) includes cruise control, fog lamps, and front and rear spoilers. To this, extra value package 2 880) adds 16-inch alloy wheels and power moonroof. a five-speed manual transmission is standard on matrix and matrix xr. Xrs is available only with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission. It comes with 16-inch alloy wheels and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution. The matrix also shares much in common with the pontiac vibe. Gm and toyota developed the vehicles jointly, saving money for both companies and allowing each to offer the vehicles at an affordable price. Matrix and vibe do not look alike, however, as their styling was designed independently by toyota and pontiac. the matrix is 3 inches taller but 8 inches shorter in length than a toyota corolla. It uses the same wheelbase but a wider track. These dimensions give the matrix a unique stance. It reminds us somewhat of the ford focus hatchback, which is slightly smaller. It is also similar in size to the chrysler pt cruiser, although the matrix has slightly less interior storage capacity due to its lower roofline. and it's mainly the roofline that draws the eye. In a reverse wedge shape, the roof slopes down at the back while the belt line along the lower edge of the side windows slopes up, creating a sleek wedge shape to the windows. the tailgate opens up just as in an suv or minivan, and the frameless window can be opened separately for quick access. the front of the car has a purposeful looking nose with a relatively high hood line accentuated by a big grille. Engine cooling is achieved through a large aperture under the front bumper which features two small foglights. a wide track, along with generous tires fill the wheel wells nicely, helping give the matrix an aggressive look. All in all it's a car that looks substantial despite its relatively small size. interiorsitting in a toyota matrix is somewhat like sitting in an suv, with upright seating and a commanding view of the road ahead. the driver will find that the cockpit is unlike that of other toyota cars. The gauges glow red at all times, even during the daytime, as insufficient ambient light reaches them. Chrome rims accentuate each pod and fake brushed aluminum trim is used to surround switches on the dashboard and door panels. the combined radio and cd player sits directly to the right of the instrument pods, while the heating and ventilation controls are immediately below. If the radio buttons and the general un-toyota appearance of the trim seems familiar that's because the interior is all but identical to the pontiac vibe, even down to the american delco radio. the shifter is also right there, just a few inches from the steering wheel. It's conveniently located more than a foot off the floor in a position that's become fashionable in high-performance rally cars as well as the lexus rx, a luxury suv. there's 15 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. The rear seat is split 60/40 and pressing a button flips the seat down easily to provide a completely flat floor capable of holding 53 cubic feet of cargo. The cargo floor is finished in a hard ribbed plastic designed to offer easy cleanup. An xr 4wd model we drove came with a carpeted cargo mat 56) that did a much better job of keeping cargo from sliding around, however. There are several other tie-downs positioned along the sides. Storage compartments and cargo nets provide owners with maximum utility. All of this makes the interior as versatile as any station wagon and better than most suvs. Shorter passengers sitting in the rear seats might find the view slightly claustrophobic due to the small side windows. one cool feature is the available 115-volt power outlet located in the front dashboard alongside a regular 12-volt outlet. It's a low-power ac plug suitable for powering a laptop computer, but it isn't capable of running power tools. (toyota is working on that, however.). driving impressiondespite its boxy looks there is no denying that the toyota matrix is a sporty car. shifting the manual transmission is easy. Although it might seem that the upright seating position and the high mounted gearshift would take some getting used to, it did not. Shifts are smooth and the standard engine revs nicely. Although the matrix is quite light it's not as fast as expected as the base engine only delivers 130 horsepower. Judicious use of the gears allows one to have fun, however. There's plenty of pep when driving around town, even with the automatic transmission. Equipped with the five-speed manual, the matrix gets an epa-estimated 29/35 mpg city/highway. steering is precise and even if the center of gravity is relatively high there is little body roll. In fact the matrix feels just like any other small sporty car. That's not surprising as it uses many components straight from the sporty toyota celica. in keeping with the car's sporty attributes, the brakes are effective. we also drove the sporty xrs with the 180-horsepower engine. The power increase comes from variable valve timing and lift, which comes into play between 6000 rpm and the 8400-rpm redline. The six-speed gearbox ratios are the same as those used in the celica, but the matrix uses taller tires effectively giving it taller gear ratios. We quickly grew tired of the high-revving 180-horsepower xrs, however. We found that the xrs was not nearly as pleasant as the xr. With more weight (185 pounds more) and slightly less power than the front-drive models plus the friction from the all-wheel-drive system, the 4wd models do not accelerate as quickly as 2wd models. It's still peppy, however, and the all-wheel provides superior traction on snow, ice, and slippery pavement. Matrix xr 4wd autom. All-new version much improved, practical, fuel-efficient. introductionthe 2009 toyota matrix is a new, second-generation design developed in tandem with the corolla sedan. In essence, the matrix is the wagon/hatch version of the corolla. In fact, the company refers to it as the toyota corolla matrix. Everything else is newer, making the matrix an all-new car. The 1. 8-liter engine is new. Gearboxes, brakes, steering and safety systems have all been redone. The body work is all new, also, though the design is an evolutionary update of the previous version. the new 2009 toyota matrix is bigger than the previous version, but toyota hasn't lost sight of this being its smallest crossover vehicle. Given toyota's history we can't imagine they will require much in the way of expensive repairs or maintenance. The matrix doesn't stand out anywhere as much as it provides a useful, better than average package for any purpose short of pickup-sized building materials or a trip to the red carpet. In short, the new toyota matrix is a very sensible choice. by price and hatchback design, the matrix slots into multiple categories for cross-shoppers, including roomy compact cars such as the honda fit, nissan versa, subaru impreza, and vw golf; small vans and crossovers such as the honda cr-v, kia sportage/hyundai tucson, mazda5, nissan rogue; and the less-easily categorized chevrolet hhr, dodge caliber, scion xd, and suzuki sx4. lineupthe 2009 toyota matrix comes in base, s, s awd, and xrs models. the standard matrix 16,190) uses a 1. 8-liter engine and five-speed manual gearbox and comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, 60/40 split-fold rear seat, am/fm/cd stereo compatible with mp3/wma files, input jack and xm satellite radio, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, optitron (electroluminescent) gauges with tachometer, power mirrors, intermittent wipers, engine immobilizer, and cargo cover. Xrs options are limited to the jbl sound system or navigation, moonroof, cruise control, lighter, all-weather, and five-speed automatic transmission 21,850). safety features that come on all models include front airbags, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, antilock brakes with brake assist, tire pressure monitors, and daytime running lights. Electronic stability control is standard on xrs and optional on others. walkaroundthe 2009 toyota matrix is just slightly larger than its predecessor though it looks significantly larger. It's a fraction of an inch longer and lower than the previous model. three factors add to its visual size: first, the nose is sleeker, with lights that more closely parallel the camry, s and xrs models have a deeper chin than before, and the grille opening sweeps cleanly up and outboard on the hood, becoming the base of the windshield pillar. The second contributor is the inch-wider rear track which carries more visual weight further aft. Finally, the c-pillar (the roof support behind the back door) is very thick and the side window has been removed, with just a sliver of curved glass at the end, leading into the hatch glass. the longer, lower front end of s and xrs models employs outer black nacelles for fog lamp housings and the center section is dark to the bottom for a more aggressive look. The s and xrs also have different lower trim all around the body and the dark material that shows on the seams between the panels and main bodywork gives a hint of the add-on look, a situation more pronounced on light-color cars. in profile the front side windows resemble a wine glass on its side; the upper side curved along its length and the lower side scoops downward, for a good view of the mirror without the mirror blocking any forward or side vision, and then begins the taper upward to the rear. Painted mirrors and door handles, lack of any side moldings, and just two pieces of glass keep visual clutter to a minimum. seventeen-inch wheels make the best of big wheel wells while the rear spoiler serves as a punctuation point to an otherwise near-hemispherical rear end, and auxiliary sunshade for rear-seat riders. it's no stretch to consider matrix the wagon or hatchback version of the corolla, indeed the official name is corolla matrix. The corolla is about seven inches longer and half that lower, excepting headroom has larger interior dimensions but a smaller trunk. Expect a matirx to cost about $1,000 more than a similarly equipped corolla. interiorinside, however, any relation to a corolla vanishes at the first glimpse of the dash, the matrix trading conservative for a more stylish look with sweeping metal-look surfaces on both sides of the instrument cluster. Two large omni-directional vents peer out the top like bug eyes and frame the gauges that include round dials for speed and engine revs and an oblong unit for ancillary information. at this price point the materials include fabric upholstery and door panels, with plastic on trim pieces such as lower doors. It doesn't look cheap or like this is where the money was saved, and all the switchgear has a quality feel to it. Colors carry a fire theme, with either ash (light gray) or charcoal (very dark gray) to choose from. A variety of storage spaces and sizes can be found within driver's reach, and most have a nonskid, quieting rubber mat on the bottom, a big improvement over the slippery surface that came standard on the previous-generation matrix. manually adjusted front buckets are well-placed for tall driver headroom and short driver visibility, and provide good support for the length of time it takes to burn a tank of gas, which is a long time. Primary operating controls are on steering column stalks, with less-frequent items like the optional stability control defeat on the dash; the shifter (automatic or manual) rides on a perch off.
